"how will we create a village stronger than war?"
A road-trip, a performance art based community project,
and a film.
The Story:
What we are doing: We are taking the Heart Warrior Project on the road to Colorado Springs. We’ve been invited to Colorado Springs to design and facilitate a performance art based community project that will bring veterans and civilians together for the Community Built Association’s National Conference this April (CBA). We are leaping at the opportunity to visit with the communities of Colorado Springs and learn about their experience of, and desires for, community. Why Colorado Springs? It is home to 50,000 active duty military and their families, as well as 5 military installations - the perspectives of these communities is of great importance to the work of the Heart Warrior Project.
At the conference - a performance art based community project: We are excited to bring performance art practices to the conference as a tool for people to use in community planning and development. It is our hope that this work will engage people in expanding their understanding and practice of community. We are working with Concrete Couch and The Crawford House to invite veterans and civilians to engage in honest dialogue through workshops and events focused around our central question: How will we create a village that is stronger than war?
Goal of the community project and documentary film: to inspire veterans and civilians to dedicate to their personal healing journeys; to explore the difficult truths, the parts that often go unseen; the ways in which we, the people, stand up for each other; and, ultimately, to reveal our collective vision for creating communities that are stronger than war.
Through interviews and Creative Communication workshops we will foster heart to heart Conversations between military veterans and civilians. Informed by participants' collective experiences, desires and visions, we will take responsibility for creating our ideal 'community'.
How does what is actually happening in community line up with what we desire to happen, and what do we have to do in order to bring those two into alignment?
How many of us question ourselves as to how we could have more community in our life AND contribute to strengthening it? How many of us feel the lack, but don't have any idea where, in this modern world, to begin finding this often missing thing, called community?
WHAT IS COMMUNITY? ...and... HOW WILL WE CREATE A VILLAGE STRONGER THAN WAR?
