Description:
Grieving as a Community Collaboration:
 Preparing ‘A Social Mourning Place’

Fridays October 25 – November 29
*different outdoor location on Nov. 22
**final event in plaza on Sat Nov. 30, 2-5pm

Open to all community.
This is a series of 6 weekly sessions to prepare us mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically for the co-creation and loving, liberated expression of ‘A Social Mourning Place’ (happening November 30, 2019 in the Ashland Plaza).

What is ‘A Social Mourning Place’? :
It is a community practice, initiated by Candace la Tía as a performance art project in the NYC Union Square subway station in December 2010. The piece was a simple, non-verbal, statement, proposing that perhaps we didn’t need to go through our grief alone; instead, we could de-privatize it, come together, reclaim it as a natural healthy function of our human design, and invite its fullest most loving and liberated expression.
The practice has evolved over the years and will continue to evolve as we do.
This year’s practice, always two days after ‘Thanksgiving’, on November 30, 2019, from 2-5pm, is the third annual ‘A Social Mourning Place’ held in Ashland’s ‘commons’ – the plaza. It is a call for all branches of community to come together in the commons to honor, express, hear and feel our grief, to hold each other, and allow for the immensity of Life to move through us, in a co-created space of loving care.

About the preparations process:
The six preparatory sessions, Fridays, October 25 – November 29 (location change on Nov 22), will be a journey of Self-exploration – Self as individual and our collective Self – an embodied exploration of our relationship with grief, love, gratitude and each other. The co-creation of the prep. process, as well as the practice on Nov 30 in the plaza, will emerge through self-inquiry and group sharing.
Breath, voice, unique ‘grief asana’ flow and embodiment practices will support our exploration/co-creation and provide us tools for accessing, rooting and centering – for orienting ourselves inside of deep communal emotional release.
Introduction to keening, wailing, moaning and “the grief dance of the spine” as well as singing bowls and sound therapy will be offered.
The sessions will be tailored to the interests and needs expressed by those who choose to participate in the full series.

Your commitment to participating in the full 6 session series will deepen our collective capacity, and strengthen the experience of our 7th session in the plaza – A Social Mourning Place. Commitment is encouraged.

Drop-In’s: If you drop-in for just one session, please arrive with a compassionate openness and curiosity about your self and your community.

Gentleness and unconditional love with yourself and your community are essential and supported throughout this exploration.

This is an annual community offering.
$$ Contributions are deeply appreciated.
$15 - $35/session is the suggested range.
Supplemental One-to-one sessions are available by appointment.
For more information and to sign-up, please email Candace la Tía: [email protected]

Previous year's announcement

A Social mourning place 2018

November 24, 2018 - Ashland Plaza - 2-5pm
THE INVITATION
"Fear not the depths of your emotions,
for it is there, where spirit lives.
Fear not the power of spirit,
for it is there, where freedom lives.
Fear not the expanse of freedom,
for it is there, where we Live our connection to all-that-is."

-Lyda Faith Ives
Each year, on the Saturday after Thanksgiving day, the day after our nationally recognized "Black Friday",
This year, November 24, in the Ashland Plaza from 2-5pm,
Tía Lyda, along with a group of local women, will set our commons, the Ashland Plaza, for 'A Social Mourning Place'.
*see below for how to prepare and things to bring

A performance art piece that is a social/community practice, created by Tía Lyda (aka Candace M. Younghans),
'A Social Mourning Place' was first set in New York City's Union Square subway station in 2010 and then, in Ashland, in 2011 and in 2017, now it is a growing and annual event/social practice - also being held in Santa Fe, NM this year.

This "piece" is a space set for we, the people, to come together and mourn - socially, openly, with community, with our fellow human beings, without shame/to release shame. To move the multitude of energies/emotions which accumulate under the surface (personally and transpersonally). To give full invitation and allowance of their collective release. This is the opposite of holding back tears, wiping them away, stealing away to a private space to sob...it is an invitation to LET IT FLOW - TOGETHER.

Pure, uncategorized emotion from whence ever it arises, to be sent out in recognition of the immensity of Life, to Mother Earth and Father Sky .... This is what the space will be held for.

"...to let the emotions flow, to remove the dams and let the rivers run free, so that they may flow into the sea that is 'We'."

How beautiful it will be...
...a time dedicated to acknowledging our Love, our hearts...a time dedicated to giving full attention to our feelings, to our heartache, to the impacts of 'All that is Life', on our systems, on our souls...and to honor the depth and immensity of our experience, to praise the world our hearts know is possible by allowing ourselves to grieve, naturally, in community, in the commons - the public space - the space for we, the people, to join together and feel our connection, our power....

WHAT WILL IT BE LIKE?
In the Ashland Plaza, a circle space will be set and 'held', offerings will be made, and our relationship with Mama Earth will ground/anchor our experience, but there will be no guiding and no preaching. All who carry tradition for grief/praise and mourning are welcome to attend however, no tradition will take precedence - while still, it will always be held, that we are living and standing on First Nation people's lands - that of the Shasta, Takelma and the many other tribes who gathered here from surrounding areas - and that should those voices and traditions grace our presence, they will be centered - if they choose to be.

FOR THE PEOPLE
This invitation extends to ALL people in our local and surrounding communities, with special acknowledgement and welcome to the confederated tribes of Siletz, Grand Ronde and the Klammath tribes, their members and all other indigenous peoples who have had living relationship with the Southern Oregon area in and around Ashland from 'time out of mind' to now. And a thank you to Grandmother Agnes (Takelma elder), for her blessing, given to Tía Lyda (Candace) through a phone call, to go forward with this social practice on this land.

IF YOU ARE NOT LOCAL
Feel free to join in from afar and invite people in your local community to join you. Not planning any high tech live stream stuff. Just people, together, openly mourning - reclaiming a natural part of our lives together.

WHAT TO BRING:
(1) Flower Petals and Autumn leaves and all of You, for 'setting the space' sacred - for honoring Mama Earth and Father Sky.
(2) A shawl, warm layers and cozy blankets and cushions for getting on the ground and for supporting Self/Community in releasing.
(3) A symbolic gift: Please bring something for placing on the altar - a piece that honors your grief and praises the world your heart KNOWS is possible. When it is over you will gift this item to someone else who is present. *This will be a symbol that we carry home with us, of our connection, of our capacities to strengthen the web of humanity - to LOVE, the whole of Life.

*Let's fortify each other by acknowledging our need to mourn and grieve together.
Let's show up on this day - to practice being together through the grief and the praise (the thick and the thin)
BIG LOVE.  what do you love/what will you grieve, how do you crave to grieve...what you are feeeling...feeling, feeling, feeling?
