THE INVITATION
"Fear not the depths of your emotions,
for it is there, where spirit lives.
Fear not the power of spirit,
for it is there, where freedom lives.
Fear not the expanse of freedom,
for it is there, where we Live our connection to all-that-is."

Description:
Grieving as a Community Collaboration: Preparing ‘A Social Mourning Place’
Fridays October 25 – November 29
*different outdoor location on Nov. 22
**final event in plaza on Sat Nov. 30, 2-5pm
Open to all community.
This is a series of 6 weekly sessions to prepare us mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically for the co-creation and loving, liberated expression of ‘A Social Mourning Place’ (happening November 30, 2019 in the Ashland Plaza).
What is ‘A Social Mourning Place’? :
It is a community practice, initiated by Tía Lyda (aka Candace) as a performance art project in the NYC Union Square subway station in December 2010. The piece was a simple, non-verbal, statement, proposing that perhaps we didn’t need to go through our grief alone; instead, we could de-privatize it, come together, reclaim it as a natural healthy function of our human design, and invite its fullest most loving and liberated expression.
The practice has evolved over the years and will continue to evolve as we do.
This year’s practice, always two days after ‘Thanksgiving’, on November 30, 2019, from 2-5pm, is the third annual ‘A Social Mourning Place’ held in Ashland’s ‘commons’ – the plaza. It is a call for all branches of community to come together in the commons to honor, express, hear and feel our grief, to hold each other, and allow for the immensity of Life to move through us, in a co-created space of loving care.
About the preparations process:
The six preparatory sessions, Fridays, October 25 – November 29 (location change on Nov 22), will be a journey of Self-exploration – Self as individual and our collective Self – an embodied exploration of our relationship with grief, love, gratitude and each other. The co-creation of the prep. process, as well as the practice on Nov 30 in the plaza, will emerge through self-inquiry and group sharing.
Breath, voice, unique ‘grief asana’ flow and embodiment practices will support our exploration/co-creation and provide us tools for accessing, rooting and centering – for orienting ourselves inside of deep communal emotional release.
Introduction to keening, wailing, moaning and “the grief dance of the spine” as well as singing bowls and sound therapy will be offered.
The sessions will be tailored to the interests and needs expressed by those who choose to participate in the full series.
Your commitment to participating in the full 6 session series will deepen our collective capacity, and strengthen the experience of our 7th session in the plaza – A Social Mourning Place. Commitment is encouraged.
Drop-In’s: If you drop-in for just one session, please arrive with a compassionate openness and curiosity about your self and your community.
Gentleness and unconditional love with yourself and your community are essential and supported throughout this exploration.
This is an annual community offering.
$$ Contributions are deeply appreciated.
$5 - $25/session is the suggested range.
Supplemental One-to-one sessions are available by appointment.
For more information and to sign-up, please email Candace/Tía Lyda: [email protected]
